Merit Badge University

The Grand Rapids Public Museum and the the Boy Scouts of America Gerald R. Ford Council have teamed up to present Merit Badge University hosted by the Public Museum.

This one-day, indoor event will offer morning, afternoon and all-day workshops at the Museum.  Participants can earn up to eleven different Cub Scout pins and Boy Scout merit badges.

Knowledgeable instructors and certified merit badge counselors will be on-hand to lead scouts in fulfilling their requirements.

Scouts may register individually for up to two workshops depending on times and availability. Paid advance registration is required as space is limited. Fees include Museum admission and supplies.

Collecting 9:30 am - Noon
Scouts will learn from Museum experts about collecting, organizing, and displaying the Museum’s artifacts. Scouts are expected to bring at least part of a collection that they have started which they will display. This collection may not be stamps or money. At the close of this event the Scouts will have completed Merit Badge requirements 2, 3a, 3b, 3c, 4a, 4b, 4c, 5a, 5b, 5c, 5d, 5e, 6, 7, 8, and 9.  Prerequisite: 1 (Written report as described in Merit Badge Requirements). A certified counselor will be on site to sign off those scouts completing their requirements.

Stamp Collecting 9:30 am - Noon
Scouts will learn from a life-long stamp collector about the rewards of this hobby. Scouts are expected to bring in a stamp collection they have started. At the close of this event the Scouts will have completed Merit Badge requirements 1, 2, 4, 5, 7a & 7b. Prerequisites are 3, 6 and 8.

Coin Collecting 9:30 am - Noon
Scouts will learn from a coin dealer the intricacies of coin collecting. Scouts are expected to bring in a coin collection they have started. At the close of this event the Scouts will have completed Merit Badge requirements 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 10. Prerequisites are 6, 7, & 9.

CLOSED American Cultures 9:30 am - Noon
Scouts will learn about the cultures that populate West Michigan from a Museum staff member who was instrumental in the development of Newcomers: The People of This Place. At the close of this event scouts will have completed Merit Badge requirements 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. The only prerequisite for this Badge is that the scout needs to know what ethnic background he comes from.

CLOSED Graphic Arts 1:00 to 4:30 pm
Scouts will learn from a graphic artist and a printer the history and future of Graphic Arts. At the close of this event the Scouts will have completed Merit Badge requirements 1, 2, 5, 6 & 7. The prerequisite for this Badge is 3 & 4.

Textiles 1:00 to 4:30 pm
Scouts will learn about textiles, the process of creating textiles and items made from textiles. At the close of this event the Scouts will have completed Merit Badge requirements 1, 2, 3, 4, & 5. The prerequisite for this Badge is 6.

Genealogy 1:00 to 4:30 pm
Scouts will learn about best practices in genealogical research from members of the Western Michigan Genealogical Society. At the close of this event scouts will have completed Merit Badge requirements 1, 4, 5, 6, 7 & 8. The prerequisites for this Badge are 3 and 4b.

CLOSED Inventing 1:00 to 4:30 pm
Scouts will learn about the process of taking an invention from idea to production. At the close of this event scouts will have completed Merit Badge requirements 1, 2, 3a-b and d, 4, 8 & 9. The prerequisites for this Badge are 3c, 5, 6 & 7.

Indian Lore 9:30 am -  4:30 pm
Scouts will learn about the Native Americans that have called Michigan home for generations. They will visit the Anishinabek: The People of This Place exhibition.  At the close of this event scouts will have completed Merit Badge requirements 1, 2, 3, and 4. There are no prerequisites for this Badge.  (Lunch is not included.)
